A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
