Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
