Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
