Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.
